China-Singapore relationship can be considered to have advanced with times in 2017, achieving positive progress in various areas of cooperation. In the new era, with China’s all-round, multi-level and wide-ranging opening up to the outside world, China has promoted a new pattern of openness, and both two countries have new opportunities of cooperation. For the year of 2018, China and Singapore have a full bilateral calendar. With the deepening of inter-governmental exchanges, both countries will promote relations to a higher level through a series of bilateral activities.
2018 has been designated as the ASEAN-China Year of Innovation. As Singapore’s taken over ASEAN Chairmanship, one of the deliverables is to establish an ASEAN Smart Cities Network. Singapore is one of the first countries in the world to start building smart cities. After years of development, it has been regarded as a model of smart cities around the world, and has made great achievements in the construction of government affairs, medical services, and smart transportation.
In the meantime, as a new concept and development model, smart city also provides new ideas for China's urbanization and urban governance. At present, China has launched smart city pilot projects in 500 cities, making the largest number of smart cities in the world. In recent years, governments across China have exchanged experiences with Singapore on urban construction, especially the launch and development of Tianjin Eco-City, Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, and the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative. Singapore has also vigorously introduced Chinese talents and strengthened scientific and technological cooperation with Chinese companies.
In this context, what are the new expectations and trends in the cooperation between China and Singapore in 2018? What are the future cooperation between the two countries in the construction of smart cities, especially artificial intelligence, technological innovation, and industrial revolution? While China is actively promoting the development of new economy, how does Singapore grasp the opportunities?
