With the facilitation of SingCham, a delegation of some 30 students from Nanyang Girls High School visited Beijing Smart Garments Co Ltd to understand first-hand how a top Singapore investment in China is run. The girls had the privilege of visiting the factory, had a briefing on the company's operations, and had lunch together with the factory staff.
Beijing Smart Garments is a Sino-Singapore joint venture which specialises on high-end gentlemen's garments. It was started in 1985 by Mido Textiles Pte Ltd., Singapore together with the General Corporation of Agriculture, Industry & Commerce of Shunyi County, Beijing.
Smart Garments produces more than one million pieces/suits a year and exports more than US 20 million dollars worth of merchandise. In 2006, Smart Garment was awarded "China Well-Known Trade Mark", an honor that was rewarded with financial awards that required stringent qualifying criteria. Smart Garments has an annual turnover of close to RMB 400 million, of which about 70 percent are from its exports.
Ms Dorothy Seet, Dy Managing Director and General Manager of Smart Garments, is Chairman of SingCham China.
