Celebrating the Singapore Spirit, with our hearts for the Sichuan people. Two days ago, the Singapore National Day celebration in Beijing raised Renminbi 175,000 (about S$35,000 ) to help in rebuilding the Sichuan earthquake zone.
26 July, the Singapore Chamber of Commerce & Industry in China (SingCham China) held the 43rd Singapore National Day cum the Chamber’s 6th Anniversary celebration dinner in Beijing. A charity auction started with Ms Dorothy Seet, chamber Chairman winning the bid for a Chinese calligraphy art by Miss Zhao Maozhu, a 12-year girl whose home town Qingchuan was destroyed in the disastrous earthquake. Written "Love has no boundary", Zhao contributed this calligraphy art to the auction through Sohu BBS (http://club.sohu.com/) and won a bid of Renminbi 25,000 (about S$5,000).
On the other hand, Dr Dr David Ong, Chairman & CEO of CNA Group (China) was the proud owner of a specially-autographed "Lee Kuan Yew's Memoirs" for Renminbi 150,000 (about S$30,000). Singapore Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew has graciously contributed and autographed this book which he wrote in Chinese "Disaster relief, my bound duty" (loosely translated)。
Proceeds from this auction would go to finance Project Lumiere. After the deadly 512 earthquake, most of the television tranmission facilities were destroyed. Homeless population had problem receiving information, news and entertainment. As efforts are now directed at rebuilding and recovery, it is necessary to provide entertainment and information to the affected population. This is exactly what Project Lumiere aims to achieve: setting up open-air theatres with satelite links to provide Olympic matches, movies, healthcare and hygiene information, etc. to the affected population. This help in pschological recovery.
In addition, SingCham in its earlier donation drive has raised Renminbi 245,800 (about S$49,200) among the Singaporean communities in China. This would be handed over to charitable organisations such as China Red Cross Society.
