Since January 10, China has been besieged by the worst snowstorm which has destroyed 140,000 buildings and damaged 600,000 homes. The savage weather conditions are expected to continue for some time, hampering relief efforts and causing tremendous hardship to about 100 million people in China. At least 18 provinces were seriously affected by the snowstorm. In Anhui, Henan, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Shanxi, Gansu and Xinjiang, thousands of victims and their families are badly in need of food, shelter and medical services. They deserve our immediate care and assistance.

We treasure our very close and friendly ties with China over the years. We therefore wish to appeal to all our members and friends to make generous financial donations to help those affected by the snowstorm in China.

We are coordinating this donation effort through a central body, i.e. Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI 新加坡中华总商会). To make donation, please draw up a cheque payable to "SCCCI" and send it to the SCCCI Secretariat by April 15, 2008. A collection box has been set up in the SCCCI's Secretariat on the 9th floor of the Chamber Building. SCCCI will hand over all donations received to the Embassy of China in Singapore for proper distribution by the Red Cross Society of China to the snowstorm victims in various areas.
